The Power of Print

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” –Dorothea Lange

Have you ever had professional images taken? Did you gush over them for a few months, then forget about them? Where are they now? When is the last time you looked at them? I’ll be honest, as a professional photographer, this isn’t something that I like to think about. The reason that I choose this profession is because I value the images I’m taking & the memories I’m preserving. There are so so many reasons to print your images but here are a few that are close to my heart & I hope that you take away something from this information.

  • Prints are tangible - Have you ever looked through old photos at your parents or grandparents house? How did it make you feel? Sitting down with an album in your lap is such a different experience than scrolling on a computer. I absolutely love curling up on the couch and flipping through pages of memories, hearing stories & learning new things about the people that I love from their past.

  • Technology changes - What we now think is modern, could be obsolete in less than a decade. How many of you still use floppy disks? How many still use Myspace? Yah, that’s what I thought. Storing your images on a USB or posting them on Facebook doesn’t make them timeless in the way that print does.

  • They can be used as gifts - Imagine framing your favorite image from you wedding day & gifting it to your grandma for Christmas. Or giving an album to your mom & dad so that they can put it on their coffee table & show it off every time friends or family come over. How excited would that make them? If you’re ever stumped for a gift idea, printed photos are such an easy, meaningful way to show someone you want to give them something special.

  • Bonus Tip: If you want your prints/albums to last for generations, please use a professional print lab. Going somewhere like Walgreens to print your images will not do them justice, nor will they hold their quality for long. Ask me or any professional photographer how to help you with this.

I know the importance of tangible memories & it would be a disservice on my part if I did not inform you of the value of print. You absolutely deserve to be able to enjoy those memories for a lifetime, not just for a couple of weeks after you post them on Facebook. I hope this encouraged you to think about what you want to do with those images sitting on your computer. If so, let me know!
