Why You Aren’t Seen As The Expert You Are to Your Online Audience
There is literally no one else who knows your small business quite like you do.
You had the idea for it, planned it all out, and grew it into this amazing way to serve your customers and the community. But for some reason, your online audience, whether on your website or on your social media pages, just don’t seem to “get it” like your in-person customers.
I’ll let you in on a secret: you’re likely not positioning yourself as the expert you are online.
Here’s why your online audience isn’t quite seeing your authority when they click on your website or scroll your IG feed:
You aren’t showing them what you do.
And when I say “showing,” I literally mean literally SHOWING. Your website and social media profiles should explicitly show what you do without them having to read anything about you.
Many people make the mistake of only showing small fragments of what they do without giving the full picture. Sharing photos and videos that show what you do and what your business is about is like showing proof that you are what you say you are.
It’s critical that you SHOW people so that when they aren’t online or near your location, they can bring to memory who you are and what you are about without prompting.
You’re talking to your online audience as if they already know everything about you.
It’s so easy when we are ingrained in our businesses 24/7 to forget that many people who visit us in the online space actually know nothing about who we are or what we do.
That’s why during branding sessions, I make sure to capture the nitty-gritty of your business so that you can post about what you do in a plain and simple way.
Images are such a great way to introduce people into the world of your business and you need to make sure that you aren't using language that only someone in your industry would understand. Average Joe down the street needs to get it too.
You’re only using your online space to promote discounts, new services, offers, etc.
This one is so important to understand. Your online presence for your business shouldn’t just be a place where you tell people about deals and discounts.
While those things are important, you also need to show potential and existing clients more about who you are as the owner and share the “why” behind your business. Connection is KEY!
Brand photography can help you share this kind of message. I make sure to get in-depth with my clients before we even talk about photography about their purpose and why in their business.
This helps me create a plan for the sessions to show details, certain types of interactions and much more. So when you want to post or share something more vulnerable, you can.
Your online presence should help round out your business, not just tell people about the next great deal you have in store for them (even though that's great too).
Which one of these do you think your business struggles with?
